The Structure of Flameballs at Low Lewis Numbers (SOFBALL) experiments aboard the space shuttle in 1997 a series of sturningly successful burns. This sequence was taken during STS-94, July 12, 1997, MET:10/08:18 (approximate). It was thought these extremely dim flameballs (1/20 the power of a kitchen match) could last up to 200 seconds -- in fact, they can last for at least 500 seconds. This has ramifications in fuel-spray design in combustion engines, as well as fire safety in space. The...

On July 29, 2001, emergency workers in Sicily, Italy, were working round the clock to reinforce dams to contain the lava flows threatening the tourist base, called Rifugio Sapienza, at the foot of Mt. Etna. Another river of lava stopped just short (about 4 km) of the town of Nicolosi. Meanwhile, the air over southeastern Sicily is thick with ash and nearby residents of Catania, a town located downwind of the volcanic plume, have been forced to use umbrellas while walking outside. As of August...

In this animation, the elliptical galaxy Centaurus A is seen through the eyes of three different telescopes. Initially, the movie zooms into a visible light picture showing how this galaxy is bisected by an unusual lane of dust, somewhat irregular in appearance. The view fades to reveal the false-colored, near-infrared view of this galaxy as seen by the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). In these longer wavelengths of light, much of the dust has become transparent, allowing us to see more of...

This 22-second animation shows how our view of a dark globule in IC 1396 changes as we move from visible light through near-infrared to mid-infrared wavelengths. The dark globule is virtually opaque at visible-light wavelengths and becomes transparent in the near-infrared. A glowing stellar nursery, with never before seen protostars and young stars, is vividly revealed through mid-infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope.

In the one and a half centuries that have passed since Darwins day, giant steps have been taken in science and technology. Scientists discovered the structure of the cell. They saw with surprise that the cell has a system so complex as to have been unimaginable in Darwins time. This great documentary reveals this design in the cell with sophisticated computer graphics.

Brother and sister dancing duo Tom and Ellen Bowen (Fred Astaire and Jane Powell) travel to merry old England. There, against the backdrop of the impending wedding of royals, they go about the usual comedic pursuit of love. This film is probably most memorable for Astaire's dream sequence that has him dancing on the ceiling. The source is not of the best quality, with analog artifacts and blownout color. For more info on this film see its IMDB.com entry .

This is a typical sex exploitation film from the early 1930s - complete with wild parties, sex out of wedlock, lesbianism, etc. A chorus girl's exposure to the "casting couch" also exposes her to syphilis. Exploitation filmmakers hoped to capitalize on the taboo subjects of venereal disease, sex before marriage, lesbianism, etc. while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 which forbade a film from containing such content. Films like this would tour the United States for...

Executive producers, Paul Burnford, Jack Stoops Variation in dark and light is called value. Value can be a natural part of any object, or it can be created by controlling the way in which light strikes the object. Artists can vary value in color by adding black or white, or by selecting contrasting dark or light color values. Sculptors create value by the way they form the surface to catch light and cast shadows. In all ages, and in many materials, artists have created value contrasts. Their...
